Soil Testing and Site classifications in the Brisbane and Sunshine Coast regions

The importance of accurate site classification cannot be overstated, especially when it comes to foundation design. It plays a vital role in determining the appropriate type of footing or foundation, along with relevant design parameters. Following the guidelines outlined in the site classification report, which adhere to the Australian Standard AS 2870, reduces future foundation defects and damage.

In the Sunshine Coast and its surrounding areas, soil testing is of utmost importance due to the remarkable diversity of soil types and ground conditions present. The range encompasses sandy soils along the coastal regions like Noosa, Coolum, Mudjimba, Mooloolaba and Caloundra. In contrast, highly reactive clays are prevalent in areas such as Nambour, Yandina, Woombye, and Tewantin. Additionally, lighter clays can be found in the Hinterland areas like Maleny, Montville, Flaxton and Mapleton. The varying soil compositions emphasise the necessity for thorough soil testing across this region.

Just like the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and it’s surrounding suburbs also have diverse soil types and ground conditions. Interestingly, in coastal suburbs in the Redland Shire area such as Redland Bay and Victoria Point, there is an abundance of volcanic soils and red clay. Other coastal areas such as suburbs around the Moreton Bay area are rich in clayey sands. Throughout western Brisbane areas, the soils are typically rocky and clayey.

With our network of purpose built drill rigs and our NATA accredited laboratories throughout Queensland, we specialise in conducting soil testing to establish site classification, following the precise standards of AS2870. This standard defines seven site classifications that are essential for Australian engineers and builders when designing foundations. Additionally, our Site Classification services also encompass wind rating and effluent disposal reports.

With over 35 years of experience in soil testing and site classification, we have amassed extensive data from thousands of soil tests and boreholes across the Bundaberg, Gympie, Hervey Bay, Brisbane, and Sunshine Coast regions. Our wealth of experience has allowed us to develop local and regional soil profiles, historical data, and site-specific information, including wind ratings. This ensures that we provide comprehensive and accurate testing and classification services for all your foundation and effluent design needs.

Geotechnical drilling in the Brisbane and Sunshine Coast region

Geotechnical drilling plays a crucial role in engineering and construction, including in regions like Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. It involves drilling into the ground to gather soil and rock samples for in-depth analysis and testing. By assessing the properties of the soil and rock, such as strength, stability, and load-bearing capacity, geotechnical drilling provides valuable insights for site evaluation.

Various drilling methods, including rotary drilling, sonic drilling, and auger drilling, are employed in geotechnical drilling. The choice of method depends on factors like the specific soil or rock type, drilling depth requirements, and the available equipment. When it comes to assessing the ground conditions in areas like Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, geotechnical drilling proves to be an indispensable tool in engineering and construction projects.

At Geotechnical Services, our team of skilled drillers are experts in various types of drilling and sampling, catering to residential, commercial, and geotechnical needs. Our purpose-built drill rigs are strategically located across Queensland, spanning from South-East Queensland to Wide Bay-Burnett and extending to Central Queensland. Collaborating with our NATA accredited laboratories, we deliver efficient and precise drilling services.
